What is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/Motor Neuron Disease?
This section is devoted to a general overview of ALS/MND, defining pseudobular palsy, how ALS/MND affects communication and swallowing, and ALS/MND as a progressive neuromuscular disease.
Communication Intervention
This section reviews the role of the speech-language pathologist and augmentative communication systems. It provides information on working with your speech-language pathologist and augmentative communication team to select the most appropiate communication systems. Issues such as funding are discussed. It also covers topics suc a s communication by telephone, the use of switches, and the use of electronic systems to communicate with other patients with ALS/MND. This section also discusses tracheostomy and ventilator dependence.
Swallowing Intervention
This section defines dysphagia (swallowing impairment). It reviews the normal swallowing process, how ALS/MND effects swallowing, and how swallowing function is tested. It decribes how the speech-language pathologist helps the patient learn compensatory swallowing techniques to facilitate safe swallowing. Saliva control and dietary changes are reviewed as well as alternative feeding methods, if eating by mouth is no longer possible.
